ATV-4 release sequence in 3D taken from ESA's ATV-4 launch recorded with the Sterex experiment.

These images provide a stunning view of Europe's cargo vessel ATV separating from its Ariane 5 launcher and being released into free flight.

The video system was developed by Kayser-Threde GmbH for ESA and DLR and integrated on Ariane by Astrium GmbH. Usage for ATV-4 was financed by DLR and ESA and supported by Arianespace and CNES.

"A certain amount of stress is necessary"

27-05-2013 04:44 PM CEST

On 28 May 2013 begins for the Italian ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano its mission "Volare" with the launch of the Russian cosmodrome in Baikonur.

For six months, the ISS is then his job and his home. He is one of ESA's astronaut class of 2009, who graduated his first complete basic training at the European Astronaut Centre (ESA / EAC) on the premises of DLR in Cologne.

In an interview with Manuela Brown from the DLR Luca Parmitano reported the challenges that he seeks in his profession - and enjoy.
