Highlights of launch preparations to liftoff and weightlessness. ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano, Russian Soyuz commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg lifted off from Baikonur Cosmodrome on 28 May 2013.

All three will be part of the Station's Expedition 36/37 crew. Luca's mission is named 'Volare' -- 'to fly' in Italian -- to symbolise the search for new frontiers and opportunities for discovery.

The spacecraft lifted off from Baikonur spaceport at 20:31:24 GMT and reached orbit nine minutes later. In under six hours while orbiting Earth four times the Soyuz docked with the Rassvet module on the International Space Station.

The ISS SERVIR Environmental Research and Visualization System or ISERV - a camera aboard the International Space Station - captures an image of her hometown.

ISERV was designed and built at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.ISERV provides useful images for disaster monitoring and assessment and environmental decision making.

A system like ISERV could aid in delivering imagery and data to help officials in developing nations monitor impacts of disasters such as floods, landslides and forest fires. Its images also could help decision makers address other environmental issues.

Artist's Rendering of an Asteroid Capture

05/30/2013 12:00 AM EDT

This artist's rendering shows what capturing an asteroid could look like. NASA's FY2014 budget proposal includes a plan to robotically capture a small near-Earth asteroid and redirect it safely to a stable orbit in the Earth-moon system where astronauts can visit and explore it.

Performing these elements for the proposed asteroid initiative integrates the best of NASA's science, technology and human exploration capabilities and draws on the innovation of America's brightest scientists and engineers.

It uses current and developing capabilities to find both large asteroids that pose a hazard to Earth and small asteroids that could be candidates for the initiative, accelerates our technology development activities in high-powered solar electric propulsion and takes advantage of our hard work on the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft, helping to keep NASA on target to reach the President's goal of sending humans to Mars in the 2030s.
